Watch: Free State SAPS to probe video of suspect ‘detained in a dog cage’

SAPS are already facing some serious questions over their heavy-handed approach to policing this week – and the last thing they needed was a video like this surfacing. Law enforcement officials confirmed on Tuesday that they would be investigating colleagues at a Free State branch, after they were seen forcing a suspect into a dog cage.

SAPS under fire for more ‘inhumane treatment’

In the video leaked to OFM News this afternoon, we can see that the cage – which rests perilously in the rear of a bakkie – also has a compartment containing a K9 dog. The animal barks and growls at the imprisoned man, who is paraded in public. The whole incident severely impairs the man’s dignity. He has since been named as Tshediso Paul Mohale

We are still trying to find out more about this entire situation. The video was only leaked on Tuesday, a full two years after the incident actually happened. SAPS are scrambling for answers, as they bid to contextualise the clip and take action against any offending officers – if needs be.

SAPS react to Free State ‘dog cage incident’

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele has since made a public statement about the incident. She has confirmed that a probe will be launched immediately and added that the matter will now be sub judice – meaning that nothing will be said about this case from official SAPS sources, until it has been properly reviewed.

“The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane regards this matter as very serious hence she instructed the District Commissioner to, with immediate effect, start with the departmental investigation to probe this matter. For now we regard the matter as pending, and will allow the legal route to unfold.”
