Lisette Lombard’s harrowing ordeal during a trip to Table Mountain has been shared across Twitter on Sunday, after the adventurous hiker found herself caught up in a fire that is raging through Cape Town this afternoon.

Latest from the Table Mountain fire – updates on Sunday 18 April

After taking on a route near the Newlands Forest, the Cape Town local soon realised she was in a bit of trouble. Lombard then turned away from the fire, pulling her phone out to capture the beginning of this fast-spreading inferno.

In the very brief clip, the hiker can be heard acknowledging that the blaze is spreading ‘like wildfire’ – and her observation was an astute one, as the wind direction changed and blew the flames towards UCT and the Rhodes Memorial. Several evacuations have already taken place – but Lombard’s breathless escape made for some compelling viewing:

Lombard may have got herself to safety, but the same couldn’t be said for her motor. She got to the base of the Table Mountain route, only to find that the blaze had claimed the vehicle she was travelling. However, having managed to outrun a severe wildfire, it seems the fleet-footed fitness fanatic was grateful to just escape with her life.

“My car was destroyed in the fire with other vehicles and the restaurant, but thank God we’re safe. Never have I experienced a fire that spread so unpredictably fast. I’ve so much respect for our firefighters. Thanks!” | Lisette Lombard

  • SANParks have described the blaze as being ‘out of control’ on Sunday – you can read their short statement here:

“The fire is currently out of control and we request that all onlookers please refrain from entering the area and keep the area clear for emergency vehicles to pass. People in the Newlands and Rhodes Memorial area must evacuate now.”
