A total of 143 schools were vandalised and looted during the week-long riots in South Africa, Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, confirmed on Wednesday 21 July.
While schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday 26 July and the Department of Basic Education prepares, the vandalism of a number of schools may come as a hindrance.
HIGH NUMBER OF SCHOOLS VANDALISED IN KWAZULU-NATAL
As of Wednesday, Ntshavheni said 143 schools were vandalised and looted during the unrest. A total of 139 are in KwaZulu-Natal and four of them are in Gauteng.
To make matters worse, Ntshavheni said it has severely impacted the school nutrition programme.
“Equipment and food meant for the school nutrition programme was stolen, which means that these schools are unable to provide the school nutrition programme to the vulnerable learners,” she said.
Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga is expected to brief the nation on the preparations for the reopening of schools on Sunday, 25 July 2021.
The Department of Health is also finalising the assessment report on the extent of the impact of the recent violent protests in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal on the vaccination rollout programme and general access to health services.
Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi will present a comprehensive update on Friday during their weekly health updates, added Ntshavheni.
