President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the nation at 20:00 on Tuesday 15 June, following a host of meetings with his Cabinet, the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and a host of other ministers in response to growing concerns over the spread of COVID-19 infections in South Africa.

Ramaphosa is expected to announce stricter lockdown regulations following a surge of cases over the past month that has forced the country into the third wave of the deadly virus.

Lockdown restrictions set to change?

Several Ministers have hinted at more alcohol restrictions coming into play, with gathering restrictions expected to become more limited.

The Presidency announced that Ramaphosa was calling another “family meeting” earlier on Tuesday and said that government has been keeping a close eye on the daily increases in case reports.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 20:00 today, Tuesday, 15 June 2021, on developments in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” they said.

“The President’s address follows a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council, the President’s Coordinating Council and Cabinet.”

“As South Africa rolls out its national COVID-19 vaccination programme, government and social partners are continuously monitoring infection, treatment and patient recovery rates, as well as compliance with health regulations and other prevention measures,” they said.
