DA’s Natasha Mazzone deletes Twitter account amid qualification saga

Twitter had a field day on Wednesday 21 April after Democratic Alliance (DA) chief whip Natasha Mazzone deleted her account. Mazzone has been embroiled in allegations that she lied about her qualifications. This also comes after Western Cape transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela was suspended from his post, following revelations that he misrepresented his BCom degree.

ON WEDNESDAY NATASHA MAZZONE TRENDED ON TWITTER

Natasha Mazzone is in the firing line as political parties accuse her of slyly updating her Wikipedia page to remove “advocate” as her profession. Brett Herron, who dumped the DA for Patricia de Lille’s GOOD party, is one of the first to call Mazzone out.

However, Mazzone was having none of it and accused Herron of being behind the change in her bio.

“Brett, let’s stop playing games. My Wiki page was changed THREE times today, we all know you are behind this, you’re just so used to working with GOOD you think this scum politics is acceptable, it’s not and this issue doesn’t end here”

DA RESPONDS TO HERRON’S OPEN LETTER

DA Deputy Chairperson of the Federal Council, Ashor Sarupen, responded to Herron’s open letter for clarification on Natasha Mazzone’s background and qualifications.

In a statement on Wednesday, 21 April, Sarupen said that Mazzone has publicly over may years stated that she never completed her law degree.

He added that the simple facts were that Mazzone completed her articles as LEAD Legal Training.

Natasha Mazzone has, over many years, publicly, stated that she never finished her law degree, and she has never claimed to be an attorney or advocate. She has completed her articles as well as LEAD Legal Training; Her articles were done in terms of section 5(3) of the Attorneys Act. As an attorney himself, Herron would be familiar with this.”

Sarupen added that the DA has sent Mazzone on various workshops and courses over her 24 years of service to the party, and 21 years of service to the public.

“Mazzone’s biography provided by the DA on its website, throughout her two tenures as Deputy Federal Council Chairperson, never made any reference to legal qualifications.”

Sarupen reiterated that Mazzone publicly stated, including on her verified Twitter account, that she had not completed her law degree.

“With specific reference to Wikipedia, a simple search of the edits section shows that over the past 12 months, malicious edits were repeatedly made to Ms Mazzone’s page, which were constantly being undone as they were fabrications or falsehoods.”
