A police officer who allegedly raped a teenager appeared briefly in the Nigel Magistrates Court in Gauteng this week.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) national spokesperson Ndileka Cola said that the 31-year old police officer had appeared before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court today, 17 June 2021 for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

“Fakude was arrested by the Station Commander…before he handed over the case to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate(IPID) for further investigation,” Cola said.

“The allegation is that the 14 year old girl went to a friend’s house and they later decided to go to a night club in Delmas. From the night club, they allegedly went to another friend’s house in Devon area,” Cola said.

“Later on, when they decided to go home…(the police officer)… who was with them, allegedly grabbed the victim by the hand and informed her other friends to leave. He allegedly, threw the blanket on top of the victim, undressed himself, lifted the victim’s skirt and forcefully penetrated her without her consent,” Cola said.

He allegedly did not stop the sexual assault when the victim told him to stop.

“She managed to escape the scene, ran to the police station and opened the rape case,” Cola said.

Fakude appeared before Nigel Magistrate Court on Thursday to face the rape charge. The matter was remanded to 22 June 2021 for a formal bail application hearing.

“IPID continues with the investigation of this case,” Cola said.

South Africa has one of the worst levels of rape in the world according to the country’s crime statistics. According to the latest statistics released by police, a total of 9 518 people were raped between January and March 2021. This is almost 10 000 people over a short three month period. However, this was less than the number of rapes reported for the same period in 2020 according to Police Minister Bheki Cele.
