By the skin of his teeth: Guard survives armed KZN courier van robbery

A courier van was targeted by an unknown number of gunmen outside Bridge City shopping centre in KwaMashu, KZN on Wednesday 23 June 2021. The guard passenger, although injured, managed to survive the ordeal by the skin of his teeth. 

COURIER VAN ROBBERY: SHOOTING ENSUES OUTSIDE KZN SHOPPING CENTRE

At 10:00 on Wednesday morning, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a shooting outside Bridge City shopping centre in KwaMashu, KZN. 

“Reports indicate that a courier bakkie carrying a mixed load and a security escort vehicle came under fire by an unknown number of gunmen,” Arrive Alive said in a statement. 

“The escort vehicle took two rounds through the back window grazing the guard passenger on the head,” it added. 

A tracking vehicle in the area heard the sounds of gunshots and went to investigate but too came under fire, striking the vehicle multiple times. Fortunately, the tracking officer escaped injury, however, It is unclear what the gunmen escaped with.

The guard that was injured, was treated on the scene and, once stabilised, was transported by an ambulance to the hospital for further care.

MOTORIST SHOT AND KILLED OUTSIDE KZN BANK 

Apart from the incident, whereby a courier van was robbed, a motorist, also in KZN, was shot and killed outside a bank on Tuesday evening.

“Netcare 911 responded to a shooting outside a bank on Old Main Road Kloof, Durban West region. Reports indicate that an adult male had been shot while waiting in his car,” said Netcare 911 paramedics spokesperson Shawn Herbst. 

“The patient was assessed on the scene by a Netcare 911 paramedic and found to have sustained fatal injuries and sadly declared deceased on the scene,” he added.

Circumstances leading up to the shooting will be investigated by the relevant authorities. 

The shooting incident follows the murder of a tow-truck driver in Kingsway Road in Amanzimtoti in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to paramedics, the tow truck driver sustained multiple gun-shot wounds during a drive-by-shooting.

The passenger also sustained multiple gunshot wounds and the suspects, who were heavily armed, fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.
