There was a tense atmosphere at the Kuilsriver Magistrates Court on Monday, as four suspects – believed to have assaulted a group of EFF members during last year’s Brackenfell protests – appeared in the dock. However, there was drama outside the courtroom, and the Red Berets have slammed the apparent ‘lack of media coverage’.

Brackenfell court case – who are the main suspects?

A reporter at the scene was confronted by one of the accused. Dante van Wyk, who was identified by the police back in November 2020, clashed with this journalist after taking exception to being filmed:

Prominent EFF figure Godrich Gardee has been monitoring developments in this case, and he branded van Wyk ‘a rat’ for his angry outburst. According to the party’s Head of International Relations, the suspects were given ‘favourable treatment.’

“This rat must be convicted and sentenced without option of a fine. He is a racist…..He feels entitled. We must post more of his pictures. The group of suspects sneaked in and were sneaked out of court under disguise and protection by SAPS.”

EFF bemoan treatment of assault suspects

The proceedings ended up being much less eventful than the build-up. This case has been postponed until Friday 19 February, as all four men are expected to return with legal counsel. Jaco Pretorious, another named suspect, was initially charged with attempted murder – but that has since changed to ‘discharging a firearm in public’.

One of the EFF’s most dependable agitators, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, isn’t best pleased with the lack of fanfare around the case. The party Commissar argues that, had the shoe been on the other foot, coverage would have been much more intense.

“Notice the utter silence and absence of mainstream media in covering this. Had it been EFF members who assaulted white people, it would have been live coverage of their appearance in court. This is because, in a racist society, it is hard to see whites as mindless hooligans!”
