A gang of heavily armed robbers fired an AK47 rifle as they fled the scene of a business robbery in broad daylight in Springfield Park on Wednesday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the incident took place at around 9.22am on Wednesday.

Several videos of the armed robbery in progress were shared widely on social media on Wednesday, including footage from the store’s CCTV cameras.  Watch the video of the gang fleeing the scene of the robbery here.

“It is alleged that five armed suspects entered the shop posing as customers and took clothes, two cellphones and car keys belonging to a customer,” Mbele said.

“They started shooting as they were exiting the store. The suspects managed to flee the scene in their getaway vehicle. No one was injured,” Mbele said.

One of the security camera videos shared on social media showed the suspects stealing clothes from the shop, while a second video, captured by someone at a nearby business showed the heavily armed suspects fleeing the scene of the crime. Watch the video of the store being robbed here.

Mbele said a A case of robbery would be opened at the Sydenham police station.

In a separate incident on Wednesday morning an armed gang  held up staff at another local shopping centre in Durban and fled with laptops and cellphones. 

The armed suspects entered the shop and pretended to be customers. The gang pulled out a firearm and held up the shop’s staff. They fled in a white Volkswagen Polo.
