Another top DA leader is the subject of an internal review this week, after the party’s top brass decided to investigate the claims made on the CV of Marius Koen. The Saldhana Bay Mayor has been attacked by members of GOOD, who claim that the public servant hasn’t been entirely truthful about an MBA acquired from the University of Hull.
Who is Marius Koen?
The UK-based institution has now been contacted by a committee within the DA, to help confirm the legitimacy of these allegations. Of course, that’s all they are at the minute – but the opposition outfit are under the cosh right now…
With party leader John Steenhuisen only having a matric qualification, this stick is often used to beat the KZN-born politician. However, it’s not something the 45-year-old has ever tried to hide – and that’s where he differs from Bonginkosi Madikizela. The Western Cape DA leader has been suspended, after he admitted lying about his academic achievements.
DA leaders accused of ‘lying about qualifications’
Brett Heron, the Secretary-General of GOOD (and a one-time DA member), egged on pursuit of Koen last week.
“When the DA cabal decided to [go for] Madikizela, they didn’t intend for the [consequences] to take out some of their own. Now there are qualifications questions being asked about Natasha Mazzone, and Saldanha Bay Mayor Marius Koen.”
What qualifications does Natasha Mazzone have?
As of Tuesday morning, we are still waiting for final confirmation on Koen’s qualifications. Meanwhile, Heron also sank his teeth into Natasha Mazzone’s educational history. The former Blue was backed up by a top EFF member too, as Godrich Gardee also questioned the DA’s chief whip about her credentials – based on an unverified edit of her Wikipedia page.
However, this probably isn’t the ‘gotcha’ moment many were hoping for: Mazzone has staunchly denied any wrongdoing or ‘lying’ on her part, and two years ago, the MP confirmed that she was ‘only a matriculant’ during a Twitter spat.
FACT CHECK: In a July 2019 tweet @Natasha9Mazzone described herself as "only a matriculant". Did not lay claim to having a degree. https://t.co/ZwNdohKs27 https://t.co/RamsEV6O41 pic.twitter.com/1JRdg40Fov
