‘Among Us’ the chart-topper

The figures

Among Us grew in popularity from August when it hit number nine on the same ranking system. The second most popular mobile game download on the global scale was Scribble Rider which garnered about 22.7 million downloads globally in September 2020.

Among Us has held its lead across the App Store and Google Play store downloads. The multiplayer PC and mobile game gained popularity to become one of the hit games of 2020.

It was released in June 2018 and became a hot deal during quarantine when Twitch streamers started broadcasting their games.

The game experienced 42 million downloads on Steam in the first half of September, and nearly 84 million times on iOS and Android. It is also the most played game on Steam.

How it works

Among Us is a social deduction game that resembles the games Mafia and Werewolf. Players get to play the game on PC or mobile devices, and the goal of the game is for crewmates to identify the impostors among them or complete tasks to win.

The impostors’ secret mission is to kill off their crewmates or sabotage the spaceship, and the Impostors are chosen randomly at the start of the game.

‘Among Us’ popularity explained

The game is developed by InnerSloth, which is a small studio in Redmond, Washington and I think a big part of Among Us’ success is that Mafia is a super fun, playable game, that even big groups can play.

It’s really funny trying to find out who to trust and also getting away with murder (Annalise Keating would be so proud). It’s a wonderfully addictive game, so there is no surprise that it has topped these charts.
